How Scenyn picks and credits other people's work, and what to do if you think it has used yours.

How Scenyn picks pictures

Scenyn looks for pictures and footage in collections whose work may be reused: public-domain archives such as NASA, the Library of Congress and the Internet Archive, Creative Commons collections such as Wikimedia Commons, and stock libraries. Each picture keeps its source, author, licence and link, and every video comes with a licence report and a credits block for its description. Members can also upload their own pictures and clips, and are responsible for having the right to use them.

Collections sometimes label work wrongly, and mistakes happen. If one of them involves your work, we want to know.

Asking for a takedown

Write to [email protected] with the subject “Copyright notice” and include:

  1. your name, address, phone number and email address;
  2. the work you own (or are authorised to act for), with a link or a copy;
  3. where it appears on Scenyn: a link to the page, video or file, and the moment in the video if you can;
  4. a statement that you believe in good faith the use isn’t authorised by you, your agent or the law;
  5. a statement that the information in your notice is accurate and that you own the work or are authorised to act for its owner;
  6. your signature (typing your full name is enough).

We acknowledge notices within 24 hours and act on complete ones within 15 days, usually much sooner: we remove or disable the material, tell the member whose video used it, and remove it from that video’s files on Scenyn. This process works for notices under India’s Copyright Act, 1957 and Information Technology Act, 2000, and follows the shape of a notice under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Videos already published elsewhere

Members download their videos and publish them on YouTube and other sites themselves. We can only remove what’s stored on Scenyn. For a copy on another platform, use that platform’s own copyright process as well; we’ll still act on our side.

If your video was taken down

If you think material was removed by mistake, or you have the right to use it, write to [email protected] with the subject “Counter-notice”: what was removed, why you believe you may use it (a licence, the public domain, permission), your name and contact details, and a statement that the information is accurate. We’ll pass it to the person who sent the notice and may restore the material unless they tell us they’ve started legal action.

Repeat infringement

We close the accounts of members who repeatedly use other people’s work without the right to.

False notices

Please only send a notice for work you own or act for. Knowingly false notices or counter-notices can have legal consequences.
